🚇 Getting around Beijing

  • 地铁dì tiěmetro / subway

    Beijing's metro is fast, cheap and covers the main sights. Best for most trips.

  • 滴滴dī dīDiDi (ride-hailing app)

    The Chinese equivalent of Uber. Book through the app, meet your driver at the pickup point.

  • 出租车chū zū chētaxi

    Hail on the street or at taxi stands. Show the Chinese address on your phone.

  • 💡 Metro cards and mobile payment both work — the metro is easiest for a first-time visitor.
  • 💡 For DiDi, set your pickup point clearly; drivers often call if they can't find you.
  • 💡 In a taxi, say 师傅，我要去这里 (shī fu, wǒ yào qù zhè lǐ) while showing your phone.

🏛️ Sights & how to say them

故宫 gù gōng · The Forbidden City

Read it: gù (fourth tone, 'ancient') + gōng (first tone, 'palace'). Literally 'the ancient palace'.

Why it matters: 故宫 is a palace you walk through — cars and taxis cannot enter. Take the metro to the nearest station, then walk in. DiDi and taxis can drop you near the entrance but not inside the grounds, and the surrounding streets are often restricted.

天安门 tiān ān mén · Tian'anmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace)

Read it: tiān (sky) + ān (peace) + mén (gate).

Why it matters: Located at the south end of the Forbidden City axis. The square is pedestrian-only nearby, so you'll walk from the metro or a drop-off point.

长城 cháng chéng · The Great Wall

Read it: cháng (long) + chéng (wall). 'The Long Wall'.

Why it matters: Sections like 八达岭 (Bādálǐng) are outside the city — reachable by coach, train or a booked car, not by the city metro.

🎩 Local know-how

  • On the metro, let people exit before you board; queue at the marked lines.
  • In taxis, the meter is standard — no need to negotiate in Beijing.
  • 故宫 requires an advance ticket booked online with your passport; walk-through only, wear comfortable shoes.
